Bilingual Educational Philosophy
Many of the children in our center-based program are from Spanish-speaking homes and are therefore growing up in bilingual environments. We have developed a bilingual philosophy that is implemented in therapy sessions and throughout the educational program. Class placements are made on the basis of language dominance and classroom teams meet regularly to ensure that implementation of educational and therapeutic goals is taking place. New concepts are introduced in the child’s dominant language. The second language is then introduced systematically. An additive model is followed, focusing on continued development in two languages to preserve and enhance the students’ skills in their native languages as they acquire a second language.
